Background

For prescribing of High risk drug Sodium Valproate to female, there must be a warning to ensure contraception is provided. This applies to females of an age range that could become pregnant. The current age range of 13 years to 49 years inclusive is not compatible with current best practice. The age range advised nationally has been changed to 12 years through to 55 years inclusive.

There should be appropriate assurance that change is implemented correctly.


Summary of Change

Modify the current age range of females that could become pregnant from 13 years to 49 years inclusive to 12 years to 55 years inclusive.

Requirements GP-07.1-013A andGP-07.20-08 would be uplifted in the Prescribing - Standard to reflect the new age range of 12 years through to 55 years inclusive.

A Practice Configurable warning for specific Prescribable items which can be used in conjunction with other criteria, but not limited to:

  • Gender
  • Age

For example, this can be used to display a warning when prescribing Sodium Valproate to females aged 12 or over and less than 50 years old. 12 years to 55 years inclusive.

For females about to be prescribed Valproate, provide warning message if the Patients age is between 12th birthday and end of 55th year.
